Your response brought up an interesting point to consider: you stated the player should try both until he/she gets the sound he/she wants to hear. However, is this really up to the tuba player? Who's decision is it really? The orchestra? The conductor? The composer? The audience? Based on the fact that the musicians are playing to please a paying audience (and this is how some make their living), I'm assuming the musician has the intention of creating a sound that, while being well balanced with the rest of the orchestra, is most appealing to the audience. Any thoughts?
