I have found that an overly large mouthpiece will make me flat and sound very flabby. The sound misses the core that I get with smaller mouthpieces. I would suggest that you try out a number of different size mouthpieces and see which works for you. Also I have noticed that I was playing with a fairly closed mouth and have been working to open my mouth up. This has given me more depth to my sound and I sound better when I play louder.
