I've been using my Conn 52J for several months now in some of my brass quintet and small band concerts, and find it to be a very acceptable instrument. It has a more compact sound than either of my Meinl Weston tubas (2145 & 2000), but the other members of my brass quintet seem to like it. As with all tubas, using a well-matched mouthpiece on the horn makes a big difference. For me, the suitable mouthpieces have turned out to be the Marcinkiewicz Tuba Exchange Rose Concert Hall mouthpiece and the Marcinkiewicz H-1 Concert Hall design (I had this one custom made, some time before I purchased the Conn). 52J. Both are heavyweight designs, with a fairly deep cup.
