I've reinforced the bell area two gig bags--a ProTec and a Tuxedo using 1/4" plywood. If you have a router table or know of a friend who has one, it's pretty easy. Just chuck a straight bit in the router, drive a screw through the center point and spin the plywood. Takes maybe 30 seconds.
With the Tuxedo, I took an old wool shirt and sewed the plywood behind it. On the Protec, I cut the inner plush lining, replaced the flimsy plastic bell protector with the plywood and sewed the cut back together. Both work well.
