Very true, and I'm not saying that the attack totally dominates brass band playing which can be extremely subtle and moving, but it is something very firmly engrained in the style. My teacher from start to grade 6 was a championship section conductor, as was his father before him, and his playing style was extremely brass band shaped. After moving from England to Scotland I was auditioning for various gigs up here and noticed that for anything barring brass band, and particularly for orchestras, I had to suppress considerably the extremely precise attacks I was used to making. The English hardware is geared this way as well - take a look at the rims on the Wick mouthpiece range (with the exception of the 3 which is heavily Bach inspired) and they are all very narrow and sharp, even on the otherwise fairly large #1.
