I would agree with Joe S. below and also ad that I think in the old american brass bands they did not always write real low contrabass type parts. In a small brass band of 15 pieces or so the Eb Bass provided enough of a bass sound and the parts did not have to go so low. I think the BBb tuba came more into use in the bigger concert bands that came around the turn of the 20th century and the use of the tuba in orchestras. Just my own personal theory not really based on any fact other than I have played numerous pieces from the old American Brass Band Journal type stuff from the Civil War era and I don't think the bands were that big and I don't think they used the BBb tubas much at that time.
