It seems to me, that the answer to your question about tone quality is that you have to have both sounds (plus MANY others!). The reason is that there are so many continually shifting demands on an orchestral wind player, both in terms of blending with various combinations of instruments, and the character of the musical line itself. Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. You have to be constantly aware of your music/sound, and how it fits in with the other instruments at any given point in time, and use your musicianship to decide what is the most appropriate sound for that situation.
