I have been playing for the past 16 years with a full beard and moustache. I have been playing tuba for a total of 52 years. I notice no difference between playing bearded and smoothly shaved. Sorry to hear your experience has been negative. I can produce, at will, any tone from double pedal F to the g atop the treble cleff staff. However, pedal tones' chops are harder to maintain than high notes' chops so I use the Concone and Marchesi studies, edited by David Kuehn, for twenty minutes per day, ending with playing one of them down and octave, when I feel comfortable with them. I practice about 4 - 5 hours per day, 6 days per week.

I have heard others comment about beards in the same manner but I have never heard a reason why this is so and it has not been so in my case.
