The old Martin BBbs were built with angled,
adjustable bits. These were not for tuning,
but were for the comfort of the individual
performer. Years ago, when I first heard The
U.S. Navy Band, they had a section of Martins
with upright-bells and upright valves and
adjustable bits. If you have the opportunity
to see the original cover picture for the
Golden Crest record: BILL BELL AND HIS TUBA,
you can see that Mr. Bell is playing a bell-front
(recording), front action Martin with two
adjustable bits.
