Recently I had opportunity to try a yellow brass bell on my gold brass horn, because someone was visiting who had the same thread screw ring on his different make horn. There was an immediately obvious difference in tone....the yellow brass was brighter than the gold. The playing characteristics of the horn were changed slightly, also, because my horn is a Schmid and the other was a Yamaha, so the bells were not the same dimensions. So that is one advantage of having a cut bell...but you have to choose the screw ring you want, carefully, so that you know what other bells will fit. (The Yamaha had been converted to a cut bell, using a Schmid ring, by Osmun.)
