at the risk of another huge flame-fest, I'll suggest that (as far as I can tell)
the sole difference in the horns is in the diameter of the bell, throat size
is the same as is all other hardware. Of course if this is incorrect someone else
will speak up.
Now, what does the extra 2" of pancake do to the sound of the horn?
Again, at the risk of a semantic flame-for-all, I'll suggest that a fairly
flat bell seems to my ear to diffuse sound a bit - this is where that wonderful
term "blossom" comes from. Since the 18" bell of the 52J has less pancake,
it's sound might be closer to "columnar" than the other horn. How this can impact
your playing in an orchestra is significant, as bass bone players that I've sat
next to (and been told about) seem to prefer the greater focus rather than
the blossomy sound (they can hear it better??) BQ's in my experience also often prefer a more compact and focussed
sound. I realize this isn't as concise as some explanations might be, but hopefully
it helps. Why not give Matt a call and see what he has to say as well?
