The YM leadpipe does have a very steep taper and probably gives the instrument its distinctive sound, but leadpipe swapping is easy to do and non-destructive. Eventually, I figure that curiosity would have gotten the better of me and I would have tried the leadpipe trick.

The S-W straight leadpipes are indeed pitch-filled. I like Cerrobend better because it expands slightly while cooling and is a lot more rigid (about like pewter at room temperature), meaning that you can simply tap out ripples that form during bending. And there's the 158F melting point... But lots of people use pitch and that's what the leadpipe comes filled with.

You can order Cerrobend from McMaster-Carr for about $27.50 for a pound-and-a-half ingot. I coat the inside of the tubes with cooking spray before filling them.

Hey, I forgot--Merry Christmas!
