This may seem a silly question to many of you, but I would am curious and would appreciate any help from anyone out there who knows.
Some years ago I bought an old (30s?) Hawkes EEb 4-valve tuba. I was never very pleased with it because the low Eb is always somewhat flat in pitch compared to the rest of the horn's notes. I gave up on it and let it sit for a long time, until yesterday. I thought I'd try it again. Maybe I've changed over the years? Nope, it's still the same. As I was dusting it off and oiling the valves, I noticed that it has "compensating' stamped on the bell along with the name etc.
I have two questions:
What, if anything, can I do to correct the flat note?
What is "compensating" and how does it work?
