Flying with an upright is a LARGE hassle. The couple of times I've had to do it years ago, a ticket was bought for it by the client and it flew in the seat next to me, getting our little group bumped up to first class a couple of times, thankfully, but at the irritation of the people behind me who paid good money to sit there. Then there's the long walk to and from gates, not good on the back if you don't have a wheel.
There is a recurring thread on this topic on the 2xbasslist, including many horror stories as you can imagine. The best remedy that I know of is what the great bassist, Charlie Haden does. He has a bass provided for him at each performance, as to not endanger the 150 year-old French bass he is known to play. One of those basses was mine(200 year-old German), which I was happy to loan to my old school for their jazz festival.
