The safest way to split the tubing is with a pair of sharp scissors. I get the cut ends to melt over a gas flame(careful, they tend to catch fire), stick them together and quench under running cold water. Takes a bit of planning. Get the water running before you start to melt the tubing. It will protect, but it will also change the playing characteristics of the horn.
