Why don't you email John D. Rojak of the AMERICAN BRASS QUINTET what it's like playing bass trombone in a quintet. The man is awsome and if you play like he can, I think you'll have no outside complaints about playing bass bone in a quintet. You could also ask his collegue Ray Mase how HE likes having a bass trombone in the group.
Personally, I would play which ever instrument you feel most compitant on. You need to play in tune with a good sound (you know this). However, you need to be extremely flexible in a quintet setting (playing loud/soft, heavy/light, big/small, etc). If either horn is tying you down, I'd try something else.
