I've got a 15" bell frosted New Standard EEb from about 1974 and the whole instrument feels more 'heavy duty' than the more modern instruments. The metal seems thicker than the frosted EEb Imperial I had, and certainly thicker than my 18 year old EEb 981.
Mind you, it seems to get dented just as easily...
