Every note is going to react differently to the same dent. No Tuba plays perfectly even when "NEW". Laws of physics tell us this.
It could be that a dent in the outer bout might fix an otherwise disagreeable horn.
It's all in where the nodal points either hit &/or miss for each note.
It's true you don't want any dents in the lead pipe, or any narrow portion of the tubing. but as far as an oval area in the larger tubing, that's not going to make or break a horn.
I would like to advance a theory here now, that an entirely oval tubed TUBA with short action (oval) valves would be a great thing. Making an otherwise 6/4 horn 3/4 sized, yet still sounding HUGE. It would most definitely work, AND while making the horn more crash resistant.
