Roger and Jay,
I studied (trombone) for 10 years with Dr Donald Reinhardt, who invented "The Pivot System". You both partly describe it, except that it’s different for each player because no two embouchures are the same, and when Jay says he does not pivot "in any way, shape, or form", what he’s describing IS what Reinhardt taught - "no shifting is required", with all the advantages you list. The object is to play the entire range on one embouchure setting. I’m positive that if I were to photograph your embouchure on different notes, I could show you your "pivot" as Reinhardt taught it. It’s just not what you think, and it does work, and every successful player does it. Most tuba players shift for the low range only because it produces instant results so they never learn how to do it without shifting.
