When I tried tubas at the Brasswind about 6 months ago, I came away with nearly the same impressions you did. I was not a big fan of the MW 2145. I played a Miraphone 188 there that had amazing response (I haven't encountered a horn I've found easier to play), but it had that "plain vanilla" Miraphone sound.
And we both ended up with the same horn in the end--the Rudolf Meinl CCC, and I am very pleased with mine.
