I've only had experience working with non-compensating instruments in the pitch conversion business, so that's all I can speak about.

If you have a tuner that will allow you to set the reference pitch to A=435, try seeing how the horn plays at this reference. If it's lousy, it's not going to improve by shortening the tuning slide. Note that leaky valves can affect intonation.

If it appears to play very nicely in tune, then whacking off a couple inches (an inch or so from each side) from the tuning slide will most likely get you where you need. I don't think the minor adjustment will play hob with the compensation system.

My questionable opinion tempered by my own worthless experience.
