The way I understand it, the 3+1 system was used becuse there was not room to put the 4th valve up with the others on a compensating horn. Also, having the 4th valve "downstream" a little makes it possible to have a slightly larger bore.
My pinky was "designed" just fine, and I happen to find the inline system to be easier. I guess it depends on which system you have spent the most time with.
