For notation software I've been using lilypond. It's pretty powerful considering its open source freeware. The only downside I could see is that you need to be running a *NIX (linux, solaris, etc.). One really cool aspect of it is that you can output postscripts and then to a pdf so that the music can be easily shared. The link is http://lilypond.org in case my link below doesn't work.
