I find that I can play faster passages only on a 3+1 effectively. There are some bits in brass band music that are impossible on an inline (IMHO) as they are too low to let my normal 3 move whilst holding the 4th down. I do possess both types, and find the inline one good for other things (orchestral work etc.), but a inlineis not an effective option in a top section British brass band.
I was also under the impression that Booseys (or Hawkes?) patented the 3+1 compensating system, and that's why the earlier top action Yamahas et al were in line. The patent only recently ran out, therefore the new Yamaha 3+1 etc. This came from a reputable source!
