I played the tuba in college. One day the church orchestra needed a bass player and I picked up the string bass and started to play. It didn't take me long to get the hang of it. About a year ago I started to play electic bass. My son is a much better player than I am.
You are correct in saying that there are a ton of gigs out there for the asking for bass players. I think tuba majors should be required to play the electric bass in college also. If you want to keep playing after college that's the only way to go.
