I played a compensating F/CC tuba by Boosey and Hawkes for several years and had no trouble on the low notes. Phil Catelinet played an identical F tuba and he could play lower than the piano A at 17.5 Hertz. I believe that without a compensating or a double tuba the terrible slide pulls and crazy fingerings combined with unsuitable mouthpieces explains a lot of the trouble.
