Personally, I have used other cleaners to clean a valve, and then lubricate. If you want to use the WD40, then use it if there is no heavy build-up to remove. As I will be flamed for saying this, I have used brasso and other brass cleaners to clean a valve before lubricating. Brasso works quicker, but you have to clean the residue more carefully. I reserve the WD40 for my pistol and long guns, where the build-up from gunpowder and water is less in quantity than the build-up from whatever is on a piston or rotor.
