I'd have to say that while midwinter is an excellent time to purchase a horn because of overstock and slow markets, I'd say that the best time is indeed when your child is practicing daily, listens to and follows constructive criticism from teachers, and when he or she begins to repeatedly treat the school horn with the respect and care that a $1,000 - $4,000 instrument is due. A child that ignores advice on basics such as breathing, posture, mouthpieces and basic care of the school horn will not treat his or her own horn any better, and you will be out a considerable amount of money.
