Doing a symphony concert at a high school some years ago I peered through a window into the instrument room and saw an ancient Beuscher helicon in a corner, missing one piston. The band director there was an old friend; he was so glad to get rid of it that he drove it to my house, about 40 miles one way. I called Walter Sear about a valve section and came home with a four-piston set (pretty old but workable) for $25. I had it playable within a week and have used it ever since as my main dixieland tuba. After 25 years I put a new Bohm & Meinl valve section on it, which did set me back a few bucks, but I still consider it a bargain.
