In my opinion, I think the Yamaha has a darker, richer tone. The bore on the 642 is a bit larger at .591 compared with the Sovereign at .580.
I own a Yamaha 641 and play in church frequently. I get many comments on how rich the tone is on this horn. FWIW, I use a Wick 5AL mpc where I used to use a Schilke 51D. The tone is better for me with the Wick. Comfortable rim too.
