Thanks for all the advice, on and off the BBS! I've done some experimenting & determined that the problem is (mostly) not me (-: I am able to reliably nail everything down to pedal G (2 ocatves below bass cleff) when sufficiently warmed up, and that D and the Db below it are the ONLY notes that are problems. It doesn't seem to be any one valve, but a certain magic combintion that doesn't speak well. Perhaps it is a tuning/setting issue, but with any luck, I'll have my own horn back soon, and the problem will be moot (but I'm not holding my breath ... I haven't seen my baby since May!). Until then, I'll keep practicing & goofing around with that note (as well as the rest of the piece).

Oh, and as for my level of expertise, let's just say calling me a hack would be a great compliment (-;
