I "modified" my pt 44 mouthpiece a few years back and i liked the results that i got..
it took awhile to get used to the change just like a brand new mouth piece but i drilled the 44 throat to match the 88 throat (actually its a bit larger)
when enlarging the throat it relieves a bit of backpressure but not a solution to that problem, just like bass trombone players who play without a leadpipe-a wider, slower stream of air will produce a larger sound, in ideal conditions, if the thraot becomes too large it can ruin the mouthpiece completely and become like a perpetual buzz even when in the instrument...
