We are all teachers

I have noticed some short tempers among the tubenet-ers, and it brings to mind something Phil Myers (NY Phil) said. He said that all musicians are teachers, whether they have a degree in teaching, whether they ever step foot in a classroom, or ever teach a lesson. Each member of the musical community affects every other member. If you play in an orchestra, someone is listening to you, and learning from you. If you lead a church choir, the members of the church will also see you.

Let us remember that as we share ideas and questions with our low brass brethren. We are all teachers and lead by example, but also students with room to grow. I am proud to be a tuba player because of my community of teachers and collegues. Moms and Dads and new musicians, as well as new band directors, see this great community. Let us not destroy that because of mis-spellings and ideas we don't agree on.

I'll get down from my soapbox now. Play well.

Dan
