I got a toploader with my tuba when I purchased it - and hated it. It did seem to have more solid protection for the bell with some sort of heavy material supporting the lid such as thin plywood or heavy cardboard, but it was very difficult to load and the valve paddles kept getting caught on the sides while loading. I have a reunion blues side loader and absolutely love it. Go with the side loader. I think there is a reunion blues web site - but I've forgotten where it is.
