if you want to oil them THOROUGHLY, you need to remove the valve, wipe off the schmutz and evenly oil the whole piston. Sometimes we don't have time to go through all this (especially when you're playing a concert) and for this quick and dirty method, I just drop some oil through the hole in the back valve cap.
