It's a lot easier for new trumpet players (4-5th graders) to hold a trumpet in their left hand while pressing the valves and remove each slide. On the trumpet, you can actually see the pistons with the slides removed and can easily drop some valve oil down the slides an onto them. Much safer for youngsters than taking out the pistons, laying them on something, risking dropping, cross threading, putting in backwards, etc. (Once a youth's mom brought me a trumpet with two of the 3 valves spun around backwards - it wouldn't even blow). Maybe that's were the local teacher is coming from.

The tuba/euph is a different story. I know some tuba players that oil from the bottom. Others say never to do that since that encourages the grime in the bottom to migrate back up the piston walls. Removing the valves and oiling works for me.
