Both of you are commenting on what we "hope" that colleges are. Some college experiences which are offered achieve this ideal and others do not.

Since many college/university experiences do not acheive this ideal and these institutions are difficult to evaluate in one-day campus visits, I've told my children that I cannot underwrite a college education unless it IS viewed (at least primarily) AS a trade school. i.e. "The reason that I want to go to college because I want to get this out of it:" If my children cannot supply something very sensible after that colon, I would rather they rethought their immediate future. I'm often more impressed with those who have great knowledge of life from life itself, rather than those whose knowledge sources are imitations of life.
