Anyone who's played in a tuba quartet knows how obnoxious the beats in imperfect intervals can be. No argument there.
But what about playing with a piano as your accompaniment or as part of the ensemble? Do you then attempt to make your intervals imperfect to match those of the piano?
I submit that there's a lot that goes on when playing in ensemble and it isn't simply a matter of "just intonation".
