Boy, is that ever a can of worms! How do know that for certain? Did you receive that kind of feedback from somebody, or did you have access to a recording? Also, I doubt if Charlie is saying that people should run out and buy Conn 52/56J's solely for orchestral applications. Many people have commented that they're not comfortable using big 5/4 and 6/4 horns for chamber or soloing, for instance.

Maybe this isn't relevant, but there certainly wasn't any problem hearing Warren Deck on his old Conn CC tuba. I used to borrow a friend's very old, beat-up Conn 4-valve CC tuba, and I certainly had no problems getting heard. Perhaps the 52/56J's are quite different from the old ones, in regards to projection (?).
