Vern,
George Roberts did some legendary bass trombone work on a single-rotor Olds bass trombone, but I don't think it was an Ambassador model - "Ambassador" was the student-line Olds horns.
For mere mortals in a modern environment, the double-rotor bass trombone is recommended. Orchestral guys tend to prefer the Bach, because you can blow con tutta forza without the sound breaking up. As a college player, unless you have big bucks to spend, I'd suggest finding a good used horn. Even if you find one that needs repairs, they can be repaired relatively cheaply as compared to a tuba. Some careful shopping will pay off!
