Rick, I think you've put your finger on the reason for the continuing pitch anarchy. I've often wondered why orchestras don't simply transpose pieces into higher keys. Of course, given the tendency to compete about raising pitch, orchestras could end up an octave higher, effectively turning our BBb and CC tubas into subcontrabass instruments!

My Meinl Weston 32 tuba was built to A=443. A "long" main tuning slide from MW turned it into an instrument that was happy at A=440. [Thanks to Matt Walters at Dillon Music for his help on this.] I kept the original higher-pitch slide, in case the BSO wants to draft me for their tuba chair.
