The 6th valve works very well for centering intonation in the lower register - particularly on the A, B, and F#. It also gives you a lot more alternate fingerings if you're into that. Please be careful though - some of these 181s come with 5th and 6th valve in the left hand. Others come with a right thumb fifth valve and a left hand 6th. If you ever buy one of these, know what you're getting ahead of time. Personally, the 5th on the right thumb works better for me so I can keep my left hand on the 1st slide most of the time.
