This is actually something I know about:
Ford Motors owns the brands: Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, Land Rover, and Mazda.
GM owns: GM, Chevy, Saab, Oldsmobile (retired), Buick, Pontiac, Saturn, Cadillac, and Daewoo. The Isuzu and Toyota models that were sold as Geos are now no longer part of GM's stable.
DaimlerChrysler owns: Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, Maybach, and Jeep.
Toyota is Toyota, Lexus, and Scion.
Honda includes Acura.
Hyundai and Kia are owned by Hyundai.
Nissan is also Infiniti.
VW owns Audi.
BMW owns Mini and Rolls-Royce.
There is no consistent pattern to the branding; as you can see, there is a lot of overlap. Same thing with B&S, VMI, and Meinl Weston; or Cerveny and Amati; or UMI. The Toyota Echo competes with the two Scion models just like B&S PTs compete with Culbertsons and the like and the Meltons.
