I have tried to play a 3+1 comp BBb Besson with a ball at the bottom bow.
As I always play tubas with a stand, then also with the bottom ball BBb. However not with my usual K&M, but with an original Besson stand, which is very different.
It has 3 feet as normally, but the top of the adjustable telescope ends in a small steel cup, that holds the bottom bow ball. That gives more freedom in finding a good angle of the tuba, than does the more secure K&M stand.
Someone once told, that the bottom bow ball also had a function for the players in mounted bands, of which the British army still has two. The saddles of the tuba players should have a similar small bowl mounted in their saddles. Can this be confirmed?
