Scanning is one way to do it, but I have found that with practice and repetition, I can read "string bass" almost as fast as "tuba". I play in a community orchestra which does not have a string bass (double bass). I was asked to play the string bass parts because they had more content than the tuba parts. Initially, I had to write in all the fingerings to bring the notes down the octave. Now I can read it fairly well, although sight reading, with multiple sharps can be a pain. However, I will get confused at times if I swing between a tuba sheet and a sting bass sheet in the same performance. My brain just doesn't process as fast as it used to.
