A closely related issue is the use of Bass Tuba in Germany. While living in Berlin, I noticed that F tuba was used in orchestras for most applications and then the BBb is for low and loud works. It is almost the opposite here in the States where we tend to use our CC or BBb for most ensemble playing and treat the F tuba as a specialty horn for extreme high register playing.

When I was buying my first professional contrabass tuba I chose a CC because there is a perception over here that professionals play CC tuba and high school students play BBb... it is kind of a snobbish way to set yourself apart from the amateurs. The reality of the issue is that there are many great players on any key of instrument.
