Frank... I feel your pain. I too had not played for many years and when I did, never really got into transposition. All they taught in high school was how to march and to play loud. Anyway, I find it very helpful to run a copy of what I want to take down an octave and mark it up. That way I can see the relativity of the new notes to the old notes. After a while, the transposition will become second nature. The scanning software is gonna cause you more grief that it's worth if all you want to do is drop an octave.
