My Fender electric tuba runs on an older Peavy Black Widow amp and sounds quite good. I can not remember the model and am too darn lazy to get up and look. Any Peavy stuff will be good for electric gigs, but will be a bit*h to lug around - get a caster cart for it.

The Mel Bay books are all idiot-proof (I am the official Test Idiot) and will at least get you headed in the right direction.

The Abersold website has some nice books on creating walking bass lines.

Have fun!

PS - Whenever you get around to obtaining an acoustic upright F tuba, go with Tomastik Spirocore strings. They are for walking but work well with a bow too. Pop's rosin (if you are daring enough to learn the bow) is quite good. And something OTHER THAN Peavy for the amp. I hate the way my acoustic sounds on my Peavy and have a really nice (but costly) Trace Elliott for it.
