I have been using Sibelius in both it's earlier and v2.11 forms, along with the "photoscore lite" scanning software which comes along with it. The process of scanning and creating a decent image which can be forwarded to the notation software is not without substantial work. If the original score is a nice clean one, it is a single instrument part, and the size is adequate, (not handwritten) the amount of time saved over "mulehauling" it one note at a time is substantial. Even piano scores work fairly well, but some cleanup is needed. As one gets more skilled at recognising the places where errors typically occur, the process speeds up. If you are highly skilled at entering the music by hand, the value of scanning may be reduced. Sibelius also offers a more powerful scanning package which I have not used. My opinion is that scanning is often worthwhile, but not always.
