The others have pretty much said it all. I find that by my playing (or singing) in a few community type organizations, I have just fallen into quintets (and other groups) without half trying. At times I have been invited to play in more groups than I had time for. So I had to pick and choose the groups I felt most comfortable with, could fit into my schedule and that I felt were at my musical level. I am in a small community now (with other larger towns not far away) where my tuba expertise is in demand and is being utilized at present in a couple of excellent small groups. I think the trick for quintets is for everyone to have pretty much the same level of talent, be compatible, be committed and to have one person be acknowledged as the leader.
